Grace MacLean is a teenage girl whose life changes forever following a tragic accident. She and her friend go for a winter ride on horseback; when the horses slip on icy ground near a road, Grace tries to help her friend’s horse but both are dragged onto the road. A passing tractor‑trailer hits them. Grace loses her friend and suffers severe injuries herself; her horse, Pilgrim, is also gravely hurt and traumatized.
After the accident, Grace’s physical wounds are deep—her leg must be partially amputated—and emotionally she withdraws, filled with bitterness and pain. Pilgrim becomes aggressive and uncontrollable. Many around believe the horse should be put down for safety. Grace’s mother, Annie, a driven magazine editor, refuses to accept this. She senses that Grace and Pilgrim are connected in their suffering, and that healing one may help heal the other.
Desperate to find a way to repair both daughter and horse, Annie searches for a “horse whisperer,” someone known for his special gift of understanding troubled horses. She tracks down Tom Booker, a quiet, patient and experienced horse trainer living in Montana. Annie convinces Tom to help by bringing both Grace and Pilgrim to his remote ranch. Though both girl and horse resist at first, Tom insists that Grace participate fully in the process of healing.
Living on Tom’s ranch forces Grace to face her trauma, both in body and spirit. Through caring work around the ranch, gentleness, and Tom’s calm persistence, Pilgrim begins to show signs of trust again.
